“Having received a strong grounding in Western Aesthetics at DePauw, I felt the need to gain knowledge, understanding and appreciation of non-western art as a second year teacher to enhance my service to students. I began in 1962-63 to study independently the art and culture of: Native American, Maya, Inca, Australian Aboriginal and traditional African Art. This would help me fill in some of the missing gaps in my formal education. My self study in these cultural areas continues to this day because it is informative and inspiring to see how the arts have been such an integral part of peoples’ lives from ancient times to the present.”
